DAVID GOODFELLOW, YACHTSMAN - The Western Wilderness

David believes he is very lucky to have 1.38 million hectares of World Heritage Area on his doorstep. As well as David’s secrets there are countless more things to see and do on the west coast.

The ideal way to appreciate the vast wilderness is from high above on a helicopter tour. Under the hum of whipping propellers, your pilot will share stories of entrepreneurs and railway workers, piners and miners, carrying you high over dense rainforest. You’ll then touch down at Teepookana Plateau where you’ll be surrounded by Huon pines up to 1700-years-old.

If you don’t like the thought of helicopter or seaplane travel, there are plenty of other ways to get amongst the wilderness. Journey deep into ancient forest aboard the wilderness railway, get your legs moving along one of the many walking trails that range from the multi-day South Coast Track to enjoyable half-hour strolls or hop aboard a boat cruise.

At Lake St Clair you can drift over the waters of Australia’s deepest fresh water lake, enjoy an afternoon barbecue in the rustic shelter as dusk settles in and while in the area you might meet some local residents including wallabies, quolls and platypus. Just nearby you’ll also find the Wall in the Wilderness, an incredible manmade sculpture celebrating those who shaped the Central Highlands.
